A freshman at Columbus Signature Academy — New Tech High School recently received an award signifying that she completed the second phase of cadet training in the Civil Air Patrol.
Abby Wittekind received the General Billy Mitchell Award, named in honor of Maj. Gen. William “Billy” Mitchell, former deputy chief of the Army Air Service. She also was promoted to cadet second lieutenant.
Col. Edward Phelka, Civil Air Patrol Great Lakes Region commander, presented the award to Wittekind at the Indiana Wing Conference in Fort Wayne on March 18.
Wittekind earned the award after completing the first eight achievements of the cadet program. In addition, she passed a comprehensive 100-question examination covering leadership theory and aerospace topics.
