Olympians lose in sectional semifinals

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East could not keep up with Shelbyville’s hitting in the Bloomington North softball sectional on Thursday night.

The Golden Bears had 17 hits, including two home runs, and beat the Olympians 15-3 to advance to tonight’s sectional championship against Bloomington North.

The Golden Bears scored four runs in the first two innings. East had a chance to catch up after having bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the third. But the Olympians (14-10) were able to score only one run of on Kaitlin Wagner’s RBI-single to cut the lead to three.

Shelbyville (18-9) kept hitting and scored four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. East’s Becca Carter put the bat on the ball in the sixth inning and was called out, but not before Wagner scored on a run to give the Olympians their second run of the night.

However, they still trailed 10-2.

The Golden Bears put it away by scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh. Jordan Johnston had an RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
