Two local residents are among about 900 additional winners of the National Merit Scholarship.
Officials from sponsor schools select their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.
The winners from Columbus are:
- Maria A. Fischer, a graduate of Columbus North High School, who plans to pursue a career in biomedical engineering. She won a National Merit Purdue University Scholarship.
- Derrick M. Klinker, a graduate of Columbus East High School, who plans to pursue a career in business administration. He won the National Merit Pepperdine University Scholarship.
College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
This final group of winners brings the number of 2017 National Merit Scholars to more than 7,500. These distinguished high school graduates will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth more than $32 million.
