Competitive band season opens Saturday

The Sound of North Marching Band of Columbus North will host its Mid-States Marching Band Invitational on Saturday, kicking off the competitive band season for the new school year.

Fifteen schools will compete, including area bands such as Jennings County at 6:30 p.m., Columbus East at 6:45 p.m. and Franklin at 7 p.m. Host North will perform in exhibition at 9 p.m., with awards presented at 9:30 p.m.

As a result of the event, which is expected to draw nearly 3,000 visiting students and spectators, 27th Street will be closed between Home Avenue and Maple Street on Saturday.

Also, people attending the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church are asked to use the north entrance to the church parking lot from Home Avenue.
