Fourth-grade class launches fundraiser to donate supplies

A fourth-grade classroom at Richards Elementary School has launched a fundraiser to buy supplies for a Houston classroom affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Fourth-grade teacher Deanna Wenzler said her classroom initially started the fundraiser before deciding to open it to the entire school through a Sept. 29 campaign known as Hats for Harvey. Students at the school were allowed to wear hats to school and donate a minimum of $1 toward the fundraiser.

Wenzler, who hoped to raise $500, said the proceeds will be used to help purchase items from an Amazon wish list for kindergarten teacher Rachel Ortiz’ classroom at Kolter Elementary School in Houston. Wenzler was connected with Ortiz after discovering a posting on Facebook on how to help Houston schools.

She said her students simply wanted to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“They know they’re not getting anything in return,” she said. “It’s us helping them and that’s our ultimate goal.”
