Harry McCawley was my first boss out of college. And one of the best.
He managed a group of us young reporters in the late 1970s and early 1980s with intelligence, professionalism, humor and patience.
There really was nothing I could not ask, nor a story I could not pitch to Harry. He was always willing to listen. He was always supportive.
Harry made it fun to go to work in a business where you never knew what was going to happen next. Fires, blizzards, sports, politics and people – I had a chance to see and report on all of it in Columbus, thanks to Harry.
A great reporter, editor and columnist. As important, as fine a person as you would ever meet.
We’ll miss you Harry.
