A Jennings County man was arrested over the weekend after a high-speed chase that began and ended on Seymour’s east side, police report.
Benjamin Scott Tipton, 36, of Scipio faces charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle while causing a substantial risk of bodily injury to another person, criminal recklessness and reckless driving-high speed.
The incident that led to his arrest began when Seymour Officer Ben Miller reported a motorist he had attempted to stop for multiple driving infractions failed to stop. That attempted stop occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Tipton and Broadway streets.
The driver of the passenger car immediately accelerated fleeing from Miller eastbound on Tipton Street, Miller said.
He reported pursing the vehicle with speeds reaching in excess of 100 mph east bound out of Seymour and into Jennings County.
The pursuit continued and eventually returned to Jackson County. Seymour Cpl. Devin Cornwell was able to successfully deploy “stop sticks” near Tipton Street and U.S. 31, and that action slowly deflated the suspect vehicles tires and slowed the speed of the pursuit speed.
Miller continued his pursuit of the suspect vehicle west on Tipton Street until unable to continue the suspect vehicle and came to a stop at Marley Lane. Officers were then able to safely take the driver, identified as Tipton, into custody without additional issues.
Tipton was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:51 a.m. Sunday and was being held without bond pending his initial hearing.
Besides Miller and Cherry, Seymour Sergeant Mike Cooper and officer Jim Handley along with the officers with Jackson County Sheriff’s Department were involved in the incident.
