Lightning strikes, flooding reported

Columbus firefighters were sent to a wooded area on Tupelo Drive on Columbus’ west side after lightning hit a tree and resulted in a fire.

The wooded area is across from Centra’s headquarters along Goeller Boulevard on the west side. A caller reported at 7:55 a.m. that smoke was coming from a tree in a wooded area on the west side of the road, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the East Fork White River in Columbus from Wednesday through that evening. Minor flooding is forecast when the river rises above its 9 feet flood stage by Wednesday afternoon.

When the river reaches 9 feet, cabins will flood south of Tellman Road, Mill Race Park will flood and other lowland flooding begins.

A flood warning has been issued for Clifty Creek near Hartsville with minor flooding forecast beginning this morning and continuing this afternoon.

Haw Creek near Clifford is also under a flood warning, with minor flooding forecast.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for southern Shelby County, northern Decatur County and northeastern Bartholomew County.

The National Weather Service said up to 2 inches of rain has already fallen in the area this morning.

Flooding was reported on Interstate 65 between mile markers 77 and 83 and Interstate 74 between mile markers 122 and 144.
