Everbridge apologizes for alerts

A representative from the alert system used by Columbus and Bartholomew County to notify residents about urgent matters has apologized.

Some county residents who signed up for Everbridge system reported receiving dozens of notifications in short periods of time Tuesday about flood watches, tornado watches and flood warnings. The notifications — either by phone call, text message or email — must be answered and acknowledged, or they will be repeated.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management officials apologized on social media Tuesday for the repeated notifications that day, and said they were reporting the problem to their provider to sort out why the multiple, repeated messages were being sent.

“We identified the issue and worked with our weather feed provider on a resolution,” said Jeff Benanto, Everbridge director for corporate communications and customer advocacy, in a Thursday afternoon email to The Republic.

As of Wednesday night, Benanto said Everbridge was confident that the issue in Bartholomew County had been rectified and does not anticipate any additional duplicate weather notifications.

“We are committed to providing your community with timely and accurate information and alerts and look forward to continuing to serve your residents,” he said.
