North tops Jets at unfamiliar course

Columbus North golfed a little higher score than it wanted to in Wednesday’s golf match against Hauser at Clifty Creek Golf Course, but still managed to win by 30 shots.

Drew Smith and Henry Kiel tied for medalist honors after both North golfers shot a 1-over-par 37 to help the Bull Dogs get the 158-188 win against the Jets. Both Smith and Kiel ended with one birdie on the day.

“Certainly those two, that would be my expectation that they would kind of be the leaders,” North coach Doug Bieker said. “They’ve been 1 and 2 all year and will probably continue to be. Those guys have had the state experience and were part of the fifth-place team last year. I would expect them to do that or better, hopefully, as we continue to move on.”

The other four golfers for North are all first-year varsity players who competed at Clifty Creek for the first time. Luke VanDeventer shot a 40 while Jacob Nielbalski carded a 44. Jackson Kerber (46) and Cameron Ziegler (49) were the other two golfers for the Bull Dogs.

This was just Hauser’s second match because of weather cancellations, but Jets coach Mike Compton said a team score in the 180s is right where they were last year. Hauser also has a handful of new faces after having just three athletes remaining from last year’s team.

The three veterans in Justin Compton, Sam Johnson and Matt Sweet finished with the top three scores. Compton finished his nine holes with a 40. Johnson added a 44 and Sweet was one stroke behind him with a 45.

Ethan Wallace was the other scoring golfer for the Jets with a 59. Justice Gilliland shot a 63, while Justin Stafford finished with a 64.

“A 188 is a good score,” Mike Compton said. “We shot in the 180s last year most of the time, and that’s kind of what we were looking for to get to, that 180s. That’s going to do us good in our other matches when we play with our Mid-Hoosier Conference teams. I’m really pleased that we have a 188 on the board. Now, we can start shooting to get that down.”
