Letter: Don’t vote for candidates supportive of NRA

From: Mark Duwe

This is an election letter, but first I want to make clear the issue of universal background checks in Indiana, that we don’t have them.

As an example, I could sell you a gun, person to person, and no background check is required. This is known as “the gun show loophole.” Any 18-year-old high school student could cut class and go to a gun show and walk out with an AR-15 and as much ammunition as he/she can afford, no background check required as long as it is purchased from a non-licensed dealer. This is where most of the illegal guns in Chicago come from.

The question is, why does this loophole exist? It exists for one reason and one reason only. Because that is the way the National Rifle Association (NRA) wants it because the gun manufacturers they lobby for might lose a few sales. This is completely intolerable.

My call to action is this. Find the phone number of every candidate running for office right now and ask them this question: “Are you a member and supporter of the NRA?” If they say yes, you tell them: “Then you are not getting my vote and I will do everything in my power to make sure you never hold public office in this country, ever.”

The NRA still wants bump stocks to be available for purchase, for what purpose? We have to step up and be sure that politicians know how we feel about this. Don’t be afraid, pick up the phone, make the call. Let them know that the NRA is not their master.
