Students earn awards at leadership conference

Columbus Area Career Connection students took home 18 awards during the HOSA-Future Health Professionals of America state leadership conference earlier this month.

The conference conducted April 9 to 11 at the Marriott East Hotel and Conference Center in Indianapolis resulted in the local chapter being named the largest in the state with 271 members. Students were given medals in several categories and earned several top 10 awards.

Each of the medal recipients are now qualified to attend the International HOSA Conference in Dallas this summer, said Jennifer Steinwedel, C4 health sciences teacher. The award recipients and their overall placements include:

Barbara James Service Award: Isha Chavan — with 254 service hours all completed at Columbus Regional Health

Medical spelling: David Phan — eighth; Saanvikha Saravanan — ninth.

Medical Terminology: Riley Coers — third; Abbey Landini — fourth; Vedant Kar (IU Bloomington- C4 Alumni) — Top 10

Medical Math: Samarth Lamba — second; Ryleigh Rayburn — fourth; Juli Soda — Top 10; Blake Dillman — Top 10

Behavioral Health: Varshita Venkatachalam — second; Isha Chavan — third; Kaitlyn Niebrugge — Top 10

Human Growth and Development: Maddie Steinwedel — Top 10

Medical Law and Ethics: Sydney Wilson — fourth; Samridhi Lamba — Top 10

Nutrition: Claire Kim — fourth

Pathophysiology: Emma Lawson — second

Pharmacology: Tejas Kandharkar — first

Biomedical Laboratory Science: Isha Chavan — first, includes an Ivy Tech scholarship to cover up to 15 credit hours for three consecutive terms and Johnson & Wales University — $1,000 per year for four consecutive years.

Dental Science: Morgan Munsey — Top 10

CPR/First Aid: Claire Kim/Juli Soda — second

Epidemiology: Mary Huynh — Top 10; Varshita Venkatachalam — Top 10

Public Health: Calista Duncan, Ryleigh Rayburn, Maddie Steinwedel & Lauren Meade — first, includes an Ivy Tech scholarship to cover up to 15 credit hours for three consecutive terms and Johnson & Wales University — $1,000 per year for four consecutive years; Kaitlyn Niebrugge, David Phan, Hussain Saifuddin, Maura VanDeventer — 4th; Anna Kishnani, Saanvikha Saravanan, Trisha Yerragudi, Samridhi Lamba — Top 10

Extemporaneous Poster: Mary Huynh — fourth

Extemporaneous Writing: Claire Kim — first, includes a $1,000 scholarship to Marian University; Varshita Venkatachalam — Top 10

Health Career Photography: Ryleigh Rayburn — fourth; Juli Soda — fifth; Elizabeth Stanton — Top 10; Calista Duncan — Top 10

Researched Persuasive Writing & Speaking: Tejas Kandharkar — 4th

Community Awareness: Saprabh Kanth, Samarth Lamba — Top 10

Creative Problem Solving: Anna Kishnani, Saanvikha Saravanan, Trisha Yerragudi & Samridhi Lamba — fifth

Forensic Medicine: Isha Chavan & David Phan — second

Medical Innovation (Original): Maura VanDeventer & Hussain Saifuddin — second

Band sign-ups available

Beginning band sign-ups for fifth-grade students will take place in May. Students and their parents may attend any of the sessions regardless of where the student is enrolled.

The sessions are for fifth-grade students who are interested in joining sixth-grade band. Students will be able to try band instruments during school hours.

The sessions will be at the following locations:

•Taylorsville Elementary School from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday

•Columbus North High School from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday

•Southside Elementary School from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday

•Mt. Healthy Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. May 16

•Rockcreek Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. May 17
