City OKs agreement for road improvements on Lowell Road

Columbus has approved a contract with an engineering firm for road improvements planned along Lowell Road from County Road 200 West to U.S. 31.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a contract for $181,140 with Strand Associates Inc., which has an office in Columbus. The road-widening work was prompted by continued development and increased traffic in the area, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/ city engineer.

The project, which is expected to be completed by 2022, will be paid 80 percent by the federal government with the remaining 20 percent being paid by the city. The city will pay its portion out of its thoroughfare fund, money that is collected through property taxes designated for street improvements, Hayward said.
