Jets go scoreless against Braves

HOPE — Sometimes, when it rains, it pours.

Although it only sprinkled a little at Hauser Thursday evening, a series of unfortunate events poured on the Class A No. 1 Jets in a 12-0, six-inning defeat against visiting Indian Creek.

Three Hauser players left the game with injuries, Hauser pitching walked at total of 10 batters and the Jets defense committed three errors, which, combined together, contributed to the lopsided loss.

“When you don’t make plays you should make, and you walk guys, you are not going to win games,” Hauser coach Nate Long said. “We did have some young guys in there tonight, so there was some inexperience, but we wanted to get them some innings.”

Sam Meek started on the mound for the Jets (13-6). He was only able to pitch two innings, however, before reinjuring his ankle, which was hit by a line drive earlier in the year when he was pitching against Lawrenceburg.

Although Meek struck out three, he also allowed two runs on three hits, all coming in the second.

The Braves (13-2) were able to put three more runs on the board in the third to take a 5-0 lead after Trey Johnson came in to pitch in relief of Meek. Two Jets errors in the fourth inning, combined with a hit and a walk allowed Indian Creek to tally two more runs, upping its lead to 7-0.

The Braves’ final runs came in the sixth, when Hauser could not find the strike zone. The Jets walked seven batters in the frame, giving up five additional runs on only one hit.

Offensively, the Hauser bats were quiet. Indian Creek starter Wyatt Phillips was dominant, throwing six scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing just one infield hit to the Jets’ Trey Johnson.

In the loss, Long did find a positive.

“It was good to see good, live pitching and good hitting tonight,” he said. “This is the type of pitching and hitting we are going to see in the tournament.”
