Letter: Lauer will serve well as District 59 rep

Perhaps residents share a struggle of mine: They care about what’s happening at the Statehouse, but often feel like it takes time and energy they don’t have to stay abreast of all the details. What I want — what perhaps we need — is someone we can trust to act on our behalf without our having to micromanage them. Whom can we trust to tackle our problems with infrastructure and education while improving public health and safety?

The problem with incumbents is that they are often less accountable to us, having become assimilated to the state establishment and the money that flows to the Statehouse to command attention away from our concerns. But incumbents know existing processes, which is part of the advantage of incumbency. For better or worse, they know how things get done.

When we’re dissatisfied with incumbents, we’re often forced to settle for a well-intentioned outsider whose good intentions do not translate into skill. They are often ineffective as elected representatives, even if they remain good people we’d consider friends.

Thankfully, Ryan Lauer is running for state representative. His candidacy gives us the best of both worlds. In Ryan, we have a proven leader in both our local government and in local civic groups. He knows how to deliver not just results, but results we’d approve of. Like cutting spending on less important things to focus on those more important things. Reducing taxes to respect the hard work we do to earn that money. Rolling back the burden of regulation while empowering consumers. Protecting those who are defenseless.

Ryan will ensure that the state government keeps its eye on the ball — focusing the work government should do. He is still one of us, not a creature of the Statehouse. And we can trust he will remain one of us, anchored to Columbus with deep roots and a young (and growing) family.

I urge people to vote for Ryan Lauer as a state representative we can trust. I’m confident he’s our best candidate and will serve us well.
