Big sixth innings help Jets sweep Tigers

HOPE — Class A No. 6 Hauser took care of business early Saturday by ending both games with six runs in the sixth inning to sweep a softball doubleheader against Class 3A Lawrenceburg.

The Jets only scored in two innings during the first game, but four runs in the third and six in the fourth were all they needed to end the game one inning early for at 10-0 win on a one-hit shutout by Tessa Sims. Hauser won the second game 13-3 in six innings.

Sims led the Jets with four RBIs in the first game, while Katie Taylor and Shelby Fugate each added two. Zoe Nading went 3 for 3 while both Taylor and Sims went 3 for 4.

“We didn’t have any mistakes, made adjustments very well to the pitching, executed on small ball and with runners in scoring position,” Hauser coach Craig Sims said of the first game. “I really liked the way we played the first game.”

The Tigers (3-12) held a two-run lead after the top of the second inning of the second game, but Hauser (14-3) turned on the Jets in the bottom of the second. Hannah Johnson tied the game with a two-run inside-the-park home run before a wild throw while Starnes was stealing third allowed her to take home plate for a 3-2 lead. Hauser scored two more runs in the same inning on an RBI-double by Taylor and an RBI-single by Tessa Sims.

Hauser reached home plate once in the fourth and fifth innings before ending the game with another six-run sixth. Kristin Keith capped it off with a walk-off three-run double that sealed the deal. Keith went 2 for 2 and had four RBIs after getting her first one in the fifth inning.

“Kristin Keith — we call her KK — she had two RBIs with runners in scoring position and two outs,” Craig Sims said. “She’s coming off the bench doing that, and that’s what we’ve been trying to get out of these kids all week. That was big. That’s huge for her.”

Johnson finished with two RBIs. Both Sims and Sydney Schoen went 2 for 3, and Taylor went 2 for 4.

Hunter Crain pitched the entire second game for the Jets and gave up six hits.
