Columbus police arrested a local man after he was accused of crashing a stolen car into a house and fleeing on foot.

Officers were in the area of Hinman Street and Indiana Avenue at 12:38 p.m. Tuesday and observed a stolen Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The stolen vehicle nearly hit a Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department patrol car and then crashed into a house on South Hinman Street, causing minor damage, Harris said.

The driver of the car — Cameron B. Sampson, 26, of 2602 Hawpatch Drive — fled on foot from the crashed vehicle and was caught a short time later, Harris said.

Sampson was arrested on preliminary charges of auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting law enforcement and a Bartholomew County warrant, jail officials said.

He was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $26,000 bond, jail officials said.
