GARLAND, TEXAS

Bob Prewitt, 93, died peacefully on May 3, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lorene Bond Prewitt.

Bob was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. In addition, he was a coach, mentor & friend to many during his 41-year career at Southern Methodist University (SMU) — Dallas, TX. His humility, thoughtfulness, kind and generous heart made him loved by all who knew him.

In 1946, after 3 years in the Air Force, the Columbus, Indiana native arrived at SMU to play basketball where he earned All Southwest Conference his senior year and was elected team captain.

In 1949 he began his 26-year SMU coaching career with 18 years as an assistant for Doc Hayes and 8 years as head coach. During his tenure he was a part of 9 Southwest Conference Championships and one Final Four appearance for the Mustangs. He served 15 years as the Director of Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports & Director of Intermurals for SMU.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Cathy & husband Bill Manor of Garland and Patricia Prewitt of Franklin, Mass.; grandchildren, Rob Manor & wife Katie of Dallas, Doug Manor & wife Lara of Dallas, Beth, Kath & Joe Bukis of Franklin, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Will & Cole Manor and Declan & Alice Manor; niece, Lori MacNeill & Family of Austin, Texas.

A Memorial Service was held in the Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church (3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205) on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 10:00am. A private burial service will be held in Columbus, Indiana at a later date.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Men’s Basketball Excellence Fund — Dallas, TX in honor of Coach Bob Prewitt.
