Driver, passenger arrested on drug-related charges after traffic stop

An early morning traffic stop led to the arrest of two individuals on drug-related charges.

Columbus police officer Drake Maddix stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic violation at 1:35 a.m. Friday near State Road 46 and Carrie Lane, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Maddix later confirmed that the driver — Kevin J. McCarty, 43, of 4060 N. County Road 150W — had a suspended driver’s license, Harris said.

A police canine alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, Harris said. Officers searching the vehicle found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Harris said.

McCarty was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a legend drug-injection device and driving while suspended with a prior conviction, Harris said.

The passenger — Christine Hilderbrand, 35, of the same address — was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of a legend drug-injection device, Harris said.

McCarty was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail with no bond, jail officials said.

Hilderbrand was being held in jail in lieu of $122,500 bond, jail officials said.
