Eagles blank Lancers, will face Bull Dogs in semifinals

Brown County kicked off the Columbus East girls tennis sectional by advancing past Edinburgh on Wednesday.

The Eagles swept all five matches in the 5-0 win over the Lancers and will play Columbus North at 4:30 p.m today in the semifinal round. East will play Hauser in the other semifinal.

“I like Edinburgh,” Brown County coach Thom Miller said. “They always have a good team, and they’re well coached. I like Rachel (O’Brien). She’s an awesome coach, so we like playing them. We know we’re going to have to work pretty hard (today).”

Hallee Miller’s 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Edinburgh’s Haley Jones started it off at No. 1 singles, and Julia Williams went on to win 6-1, 6-0 against Sophia Parmer at No. 2 singles. Cassidy Davis swept Paige Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles finish the singles play for the Eagles (6-12).

Jacey Ferguson and Leah Tucker beat Haven Link and Destiney Ramey 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Olivia Baughman and Baelyn Koester won 6-0, 6-2 against Katie Roberts and Annelise Lollar at No. 2 doubles.

Edinburgh’s season has come to a close at 2-14 but O’Brien said she liked the progression she saw in her young team, especially at No. 1 doubles with Ramey finishing up her first year of tennis.

“It’s very encouraging,” O’Brien said of Ramey, “Most of my girls are sophomores, so we’ll be hitting this summer and practicing a lot. We’re a young team, so in the next couple of years, I think we’ll be really, really good.”

Brown County will try and replicate Thursday’s success and try to extend its season even further by beating 14th-ranked Columbus North.

“I feel like we’re as ready as we can be,” Hallee Miller said. “Obviously, they’re a really good team, but we’ve worked really hard all season and all offseason, and I think we’re prepared and we can do it.”
