HAWK traffic signal coming for 17th and Washington

The Columbus Board of Works has approved a bid for installation of a new high-intensity, pedestrian-activated walk traffic signal at 17th and Washington streets.

This comes as part of an ongoing campaign by the city to place HAWK signals in areas with high levels of pedestrians and bicyclists to increase safety. With the push of a button, HAWK signals stop traffic for pedestrians and bicyclists by flashing signals at oncoming drivers.

Two bids were submitted for the project, one by Dave O’Mara Contractor Inc. in the amount of $95,474 and another by James H. Drew Corp., with the latter offering the winning bid.

A base quote of $86,227.80 was placed by the Drew, with an additional $39,855.50 for curb and sidewalk renovation and $45,595.90 for pavement markings.

The entire quote of $171,679.20 for the city’s third HAWK signal was approved by the board of works Tuesday.

Additional costs for the installation of the signal, which could be in place as early as late July, will be covered by the Columbus Park Foundation.
