Fire destroys storage shed on Sycamore Drive

A storage shed was destroyed in a fire in the 3200 block of Sycamore Drive this morning.

Columbus firefighters were sent to 3212 Sycamore Drive for a report of a tree on fire at 6:34 a.m. today in the back yard of the home, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, they were told that a wood storage shed was also on fire and flames were spreading through trees toward a two-story apartment complex nearby.

A wooden privacy fence was also on fire, Wilson said. The fence separates the residence from Legacy Oaks Condominiums, 3206 Sycamore Drive. As firefighters put out the fire, they noted there was damage to an additional storage structure owned by the apartment complex.

Homeowner Melissa Grimes told firefighters that her family initially saw smoke coming from the rear of the storage shed near a large pine tree. The flames grew to consume the entire storage shed and the pine trees overhead.

The building did not have electrical service and contained a lawn mower, lawn and garden items and bicycles, Wilson said.

Firefighters were unable to locate a definitive ignition source for the fire and listed the cause as undetermined, Wilson said. Damages are estimated at $3,000 for the residential storage shed and $500 to the condominium storage facility.

No injuries were reported.
