MADISON
Paul Aloysius Staublin was born in North Vernon, on August 20, 1936, to Martin and Adeline (Ebbing) Staublin.
In North Vernon, he owned the Metropole Hotel with his wife Claudine in the 1960s.
In 1966, he and his wife moved to Columbus, where he raised his family, working as a cost accountant and efficiency consultant for several Fortune 500 companies including Thompson Industries, Reliance, Como Plastics and Cosco Inc.
A man with many interests and talents, Paul was very involved with his four children’s swimming activities in Columbus in the 1970s and 1980s.
Paul was well-known for being the head of the clerk of course at the Donner Swim Meets.
In the 1990s, he became the first innkeeper of the then newly-opened Columbus Inn. While there, he coordinated many weddings and other celebrations during his 13 years as innkeeper, creating a lovely garden on the property. During the 2000s, Paul could be found at his antique store at 108 W. Main Street in Madison, along with his wife, Claudine, operating the business for 10-plus years.
After retiring, Paul continued his talent as a cook and became the chef at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Hanover College in 2002 for more than two years.
After retirement, Paul continued his avid interest in gardening. For the past 15 years, he created and maintained beautiful gardens at the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets in Madison, opening them for public view at two of Madison’s garden tours.
Paul is survived by his four children, Toni (Jim) McNulty in Elizabethtown, Mark (Valerie) Staublin in Chicago, Martine Staublin in Kingston, New Hampshire, Mathew (Carly) Staublin in San Francisco, California; his ex-wife, Claudine, in Columbus; and his loving caregiver, Hank Bissmeyer in Madison.
He also leaves 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, along with his brother Bill (Helen) Staublin in Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s. A Rosary service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place at another time.
