Far-reaching impact
The impact made by Exhibit Columbus last year is continuing this year — thousands of miles away in Italy.
Alchemy, one of the 18 installations featured in downtown Columbus during the event’s celebration of the city’s design heritage, now is part of the Venice Biennale of Architecture — the world’s largest art and architecture festival, which attracts about 500,000 people every two years.
Alchemy was designed and constructed by University of Cincinnati architecture students, including Columbus native Bailey Stultz, a 2010 Columbus North High School graduate who recently earned a master’s degree in architecture. The installation uses salvaged waste — reclaimed wood, off-cut limestone and rejected tiles, for example.
That a renowned Italian architecture festival wanted an installation from Exhibit Columbus shows the reach the local exhibit had and the level of quality of installations it featured.

Rare achievement
Achieving perfection is extremely difficult, so when it occurs it is to be celebrated.
Columbus North sophomore Brennan Boatwright has a good reason to do just that. He achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, which he took early in case he needed more tries later to improve. Only one-tenth of 1 percent of ACT test takers achieve a perfect score, putting Boatwright in select company.
While he has a track record for academic success, Boatwright also put in time to prepare for the test and its four topic sections: Math, science, reading and English. His achievement is a good example for other students.
Important tributes
Remembering those who served in the nation’s armed forces and lost their lives in defense of the country deserve to be remembered and honored.
People who organized, participated in and attended the May 25 Salute concert on the lawn next to the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans in downtown Columbus, and the three Memorial Day programs around the city, plus many others around the area, did a great job of that.
The patriotic music, prayers, laying of wreaths, tossing of flower petals and rifle salutes were among the actions that paid tribute in a respectful manner, which was appreciated.
