Strong support for local Relay for Life fundraisers

As money continues to roll in for two local Relay For Life fundraisers, organizers have labeled each of them successful with strong support.

The Columbus event Saturday at Donner Park attracted 400 to 500 people and generated $95,000, said Kathy Toburen, senior community manager of community development for the American Cancer Society.

She mentioned that attendance dipped during a portion of the event because of the 90-plus-degree heat. But she still called the gathering “well-attended.”

The June 2 Relay for Life of Hope has reached the $18,000 mark, organizer Jonna Shepherd said. She mentioned that speaker and Indianapolis WISH-TV meteorologist Randy Ollis helped attract some new attendees as he shared his own battle with cancer that resulted in a clean bill of health.

For the Columbus event, donations still can be made at relayforlife.org/columbus.in.org. For the Hope event, donations can be mailed to Shepherd at 305 Scott St., Hope IN 47246.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path.
