Students to build house on vacant lot

A vacant lot in the Lincoln Central Neighborhood owned by the city will be redeveloped by Columbus students starting this fall.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved the transfer of 1510 Pearl St. to the Southern Indiana Housing Community Development Corp.

The property was purchased in a tax sale two years ago for $520.72. Columbus Area Career Connection students will redevelop the property into a single-family home as part of a pilot program starting in August, said Robin Hilber, community development programs coordinator.

The development corporation intends to apply for a grant through the Heritage Fund — The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County that will be used as a subsidy to help a potential homeowner purchase the home, Hilber said. Construction work on the home is expected to be completed by next May and will have an estimated value of $100,000 to $120,000, she said.

The city also has transferred three other properties it owns — 1313 Ninth St., 834 Werner Ave. and 1462 California St. — to the development corporation that will eventually be developed, Hilber said.
