
HANOVER
Mr. James William Shaffstall, age 83, of Hanover, entered this life on July 31, 1934 in Bucyrus, Ohio.
He was the loving son of the late Clayton Wilbur and Mildred Ellen Hanover Shaffstall. He was raised in Bucyrus and graduated in 1953 from Holmes Liberty High School.
Jim started working at the Telegraph Forum newspaper in Bucyrus, Ohio as a photographer and journalist before he decided to attend college.
He then attended and graduated from Ohio State with an MFA in ceramics and sculpture.
On June 8, 1969, Jim was united in marriage to Flower Harrison at the Hanover College Chapel in Hanover. This happy union of 49 years was blessed with a son, Matthew Harrison.
Jim taught at Hanover College for 32 years and served as chairman of the art department for 28 years.
He was a faithful member of the Hanover Presbyterian Church and served on the session.
He volunteered with the House of Hope, had his pilot’s license and a member of the Breakfast Club at the old Partner’s Restaurant in Hanover.
Jim in his spare time enjoyed traveling, blowing glass, flying airplanes, music, pottery, painting, sculpture and pencil drawing.
Jim died on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 5 p.m. at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jim will be missed by his loving wife of 49 years, Flower Harrison Shaffstall of Hanover; his loving son, Matthew Harrison Shaffstall and his companion, Kristen Woods, of Columbus; his loving granddaughters, Bryleigh Madison Shaffstall and Lillian Harper Shaffstall, both of Columbus; his sisters, Janet Hahn of Cadillac, Michigan, Connie Ream and her husband, Ray, and Virginia Beebe, both of Bucyrus, Ohio; his brother, David Shaffstall of Mansfield, Ohio; his brother-in-law, Winn Harrison and his wife, Mary of New Bloomfield, Missouri; his sister-in-law, Jeen Steiger and her husband, Dean of Washington, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Wilbur Shaffstall and his mother, Mildred Ellen Hanover Shaffstall; and his brothers-in-law, Dennis Beebe and Eldred Harrison.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 2 p.m., by Pastor Katrina Pekich-Bundy at the Hanover Presbyterian Church in Hanover. Interment will follow in the Hanover Cemetery in Hanover.
Friends may visit Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
