Columbus racer notches first career win

Hunter Perry of Columbus won his first career feature in the hornet division on June 21 at Thunder Valley Raceway in Salem.

The event took place during the Washington County Fair. His car is sponsored by Willie’s Speed Shop, CPR Racing, The Hornet Factory and SBR Performance.

Perry is a 2014 graduate of Columbus East High School and is the son of Jerry and April Perry of Columbus. He is the grandson of long-time racer Willie Sallee and his wife Wanda of Columbus.

Gilpin takes third at Florence

Devin Gilpin of Columbus finished third in the June 23 $5,000-to-win late model feature at Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky. Gilpin was debuting a Sweet-Bloomquist car for the first time this season.

Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg won the feature event, lapping everyone except second-place finisher Jackie Boggs and Gilpin. Kent Robinson of Bloomington was fourth, and Eric Wells was fifth.

Ryan Thomas of Brownstown won the special open wheel modified feature at Florence. He was followed by Shon Flanary, Jerry Bowersock, Kyle Schornick and Matt Hamilton.

Fisher wins in Kentucky

Derek Fisher won his fifth late model feature of the year on June 23 at the Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Kentucky.

The 32-year-old Columbus native, who now lives in Olympia, Kentucky, is a Columbus East High School graduate. He is the defending track champion at Richmond, as well. He is the son of Anthony and Deena Fisher and grandson of Carol Haymaker all of Columbus.

Speidel wins UMRA at Indy

Nick Speidel won the UMRA King of the TQ Midgets on June 20 at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Aaron Percell was second with Anthony Lawrence, Joey Paxson and John Heydenreich completing the top-five finishers.

Tonight, the series races at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. The series then begins a busy stretch of county fair races starting Wednesday in Rushville, Thursday in Shelbyville and July 10 at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds in Columbus, with Tony Stewart joining the series with hopes of defending his race win from a year ago.

USAC races out east

The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series completed an East Coast trip with six events contested.

On June 14, the series visited Grandview (Pennsylvania) Speedway, with Brady Bacon taking the win. On June 15, at Williams Grove (Pennsylvania) Speedway, it was Chris Windom with the victory. On June 16, Windom won again this time at the Port Royal (Pennsylvania) Speedway. On June 17, the series ran at the BAPS (Pennsylvania) Speedway, with Robert Ballou emerging victorious.

On June 18, the series ventured to New Jersey at the Bridgeport Speedway, with Kevin Thomas Jr. winning, and to wrap up the week on June 19 at Weedsport Speedway in New York, it was Thomas Meseraull taking the victory.

Lawrenceburg back in action

Bloomington events rained out

Clark Memorial postponed

Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon was forced to postpone the Mark Clark Memorial scheduled for June 23 because of wet grounds. The event will be made up at a date to be announced.

This week in racing history

From 60 years ago in 1958 at the 25th Street Fairgrounds in Columbus, Bob Miller won the open stock car feature over Jim Quillen, Elmer Davis and Jack Miller. Bearcat Chaplin won the jalopy feature over Bill Mitchell, Bobby Baker, Ray Waltz and Don Holcomb.

From 50 years ago in 1968 at Bloomington Speedway, Bob Kinser won the feature event over Butch Wilkerson, Don Nordhorn, Don Hobbs and Jim Johnson.

Also, this weekend in 1968 at 25th Street Speedway, it was Paul Crockett taking the feature win over Jim Napier and Jim Haley.

From 1968 at Brownstown, it was Jack Owens taking the late model win over Pete Willoughby Sr., Gene Sutton, Gene Dalton and Cooley Singer.

From 40 years ago in 1978 at Bloomington, Bobby Black won the sprint car feature over Randy Kinser, Bob Kinser, Ron Dorsett and Danny Smith. Russ Petro won the hobby stock feature, taking the victory over Sam Cooper, Horace Lake, Jacky Taylor and Larry Harris.

From this weekend in 1978 at Brownstown, it was Ira Bastin taking the late model victory over Bob Fleetwood, Dennis Boknecht, Ray Godsey and Pete Willoughby Jr. It was Russ Petro winning the hobby stock feature over Doc Jewell, Roger Hehman, Roger Sullivan and Tony Moore.

From 30 years ago in 1988 at Twin Cities, the winner of the late model feature was Lee Fleetwood. Jim Ruddick was second with Willie Sallee, Chris Newcomb and Jim Patterson completing the top five. Mark Clark won the street stock feature over Phil Fultz, Bobby Garrett, Tim Clark and Donnie Wilson.

Also in 1988 at Brownstown, there were two late model features ran. Doug Ault won the first feature over John Gill, Steve Barnett, C.J. Rayburn and Paul Shafer. Chris Anderson won the second feature, crossing the finish line ahead of Jim Curry, Gary Barrow, Ray Godsey and Ira Bastin. Earl Plessinger won the street stock main over Gary Green, Mark Barber, Steve Kimberlin and Tom Seadler. David Crawhorn captured the bomber feature over Ray Hughes Ron Hoover, Jay Deckard and Rick Graham.

From 20 years ago in 1998 at Brownstown, Jimmy Owens won the open wheel modified feature over Mark Noble, Lee Hobbs, Ted Nobbe and Earl Plessinger. Terry Pletch captured the sprint car main over Rusty McClure, Tray House, Butch Winings and Corey Smith.
