Special Olympians win medals at state games

Nearly half of the track and field events were canceled because of weather, but several Bartholomew Brown Jennings athletes came away with medals in the Special Olympics state games at Indiana State University.

Four BBJ track and field athletes won gold medals in their division. Brenton (Joe) Cox won gold in the shot put, and Veronica (Bonnie) Grigsby, Eliana Miller and Amanda Moore all claimed gold in the 50-meter dash.

Josh Holley won silver medals in both the 400 and 800 meters. He was the favorite to win gold in the 1,500, but that event was rained out.

Also winning silver for BBJ were Malachi Cole and Cox in the 50 and Pamela Foley in the 400-meter walk. Chaz Rothrock took bronze in both the shot and running long jump, and Jason Sprague captured the bronze in the running long jump.

Logan Eppard and Becca Hunnicutt each finished fourth in the 50. Jacob Taylor in the shot and Kim Houston in the 400 walk also finished fourth.

Finishing fifth in their events were Zoe Kristine Miller in the 50, Moore and Sprague in the shot, Alexandria (Lexie) Gotoh in the 400 walk and Jacob Taylor in the running long jump. Amanda Hamm was seventh in the 50.

“I thought they performed well, those that were able to get performances in,” track and field coach Andy Hunnicutt said.

Meanwhile, several BBJ athletes won medals in horseshoes competition, which was completed before the heavy rains arrived.

Winning gold in singles competition were Isaac Spear and Alan Major (10-foot division); Jeff Burton, Krystil Norfrey, Joe Ray and Mark Rice (20-foot) and David Featherston (30-foot). Aaron Rice (10-foot), Brad Parks and Renee Parks (30-foot) won silver, and Miranda Bowling and Crystal Graham (10-foot) took bronze.

Miranda Bowling and a guest and Graham and Major (10-foot) won gold in doubles competition, as did Ray and Burton (20-foot) and Renee and Brad Parks (30-foot) Aaron Rice and Spear (10-foot) claimed silver.

Featherston and Jerry Norfrey (30-foot) won gold in Unified doubles. Mark Rice and Janet Bowling and Krystil and Ellen Norfrey (20-foot) took silver.
