Golfers, Otter Creek ready for AJGA tourney

A big week of golf in Columbus kicks off this morning with a qualifier for the final few spots for this year’s Circle K Junior Championship hosted by Otter Creek.

The American Junior Golf Association (AGJA) event will be Tuesday through Thursday. A field of 144 golfers will play Tuesday and Wednesday and will be cut in half for Thursday’s final round.

Four local players are entered in this year’s tournament. Danbi Kim, a recent Columbus North graduate who is headed to Findlay (Ohio), had enough AJGA points to earn a full exemption. Nathaly Munnicha, who will be a sophomore at North, received the tournament exemption.

On the boys side, Henry Kiel, who will be a senior at North, received the Circle K exemption from the title sponsor. Kody Reynolds, who will be a sophomore at Columbus East, won the local qualifier.

That quartet will be among 29 players from Indiana. Twenty states and two foreign countries also are represented.

The field includes 30 players who have committed to college golf programs. Andrew Lewis of Carmel is a Rolex Junior All-American.

On Monday, there will be a Junior Am beginning at 8 a.m. and a junior clinic starting at 1 p.m. Golfers of all ages are invited to the free clinic.

Circle K will be giving away Polar Pop, hot dogs, chips and First Tee caps to all kids that come to the clinic. The kids should be there by noon to get their cap.

Otter Creek pro Jon Hoover and five area collegiate golfers will serve as instructors for the junior clinic. The college players are North graduates Spencer Fairbanks (Butler), Bryce Turner (St. Francis), Sydney Anderson (Evansville), Holly Anderson (Purdue-Fort Wayne) and Seymour grad Lance Hackman (IU-East).
