Letter: God’s law good place to start with gun problems

There are many aspects of the current gun control debate. We would like to make some comments and suggestions about it.

We should prohibit the sale of assault rifles, bump stocks and magazine clips over 10 bullets. Leave the minimum age to purchase legal firearms at 18.

Make background checks mandatory at any firearm sale. The check procedure should be tightened up to include any and all inputs. We must remember that the background check is a snapshot of activity at a point in time. A change of mind or heart would tend to negate the check. A person could have a check indicating complete abstinence from alcohol this morning and get arrested for DUI tonight.

Schools do not need to be gun-free zones. They should have metal detectors at entries. School authorities should be able to arm teachers or staff on a voluntary basis.

The mental health aspect has a number of slippery slopes. If one refers a person to authorities for mental problems, they run the chance of defamation charges. Who knows how the ACLU would judge on that one. I think the shooters were hell bent on killing children and adults. That came from the heart not the mind. It would appear that they had no respect for, or even understanding of, God’s Sixth Commandment: Thou shall not kill. One’s behavior should always mirror their beliefs, or bad things can happen.

How to access and treat problems of the heart are different and probably harder than of the mind. It requires a belief of faith and wisdom which only comes from above. A good place to start would be the Bible. The centermost verse is Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the Lord than put confidence in man.”

God save the state.
