HOPE — While residents of two neighborhoods on Hope’s south side may see rising white-grey smoke today, it likely won’t be fire.
The odorless smoke is being placed into the sewer system in Goshen Meadows and Liberty Place subdivisions as a means of locating leaks, Hope town manager J.T. Doane said.
Non-toxic and non-staining, the smoke is expected to rise up from vent stacks and holes in the ground, Doane said.
Although the smoke is not expected to be emitted into residences, it could happen in homes with defective plumbing.
Since it’s possible that toxic sewer gases could enter houses with bad plumbing, residents who see smoke in their homes should leave and notify nearby work crews, Doane said.
Town officials should be made aware prior to testing of any immobile person in either Goshen Meadows and Liberty Place, as well as those with respiratory problems, Doane said.
Notification can be made by calling 812-546-0423.
People who have floor drains in their homes are urged to pour a gallon of water down the drain prior to testing to prevent smoke from rising up through it, Doane said.
In case of rain, the testing will be postponed until a week from today, on July 27.
