Pedestrian signals will be added at four intersections in Columbus by the end of the year.
The Columbus Board of Works approved a contract with Signal Construction Inc., based in Greenfield, for $139,021.50 to make the improvements. The work will involve pedestrian signals with push buttons, crosswalks and curb ramps, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer.
Pedestrian signals will be coming to 17th Street and Hawcreek Avenue; 17th Street and McClure Road; 16th and Washington streets; and 25th Street and Flintwood Drive.
“There’s demand for pedestrian crossings at these locations,” Hayward said. “All of those are challenging to cross a street.”
Hayward said he wasn’t aware of any accidents occurring at those intersections, but noted that the intent of the project is to make the areas more pedestrian friendly.
Funding for the improvements will come out of the city engineering department’s budget, he said.
