Former local swim coach takes college job

Jim Sheridan is coming out of retirement.

The former Columbus East and longtime Columbus North boys and girls swimming coach has been named men’s and women’s coach at Greensboro (North Carolina) College.

Sheridan is a former college coach, having made stops at Marshall, Auburn and Clemson prior to coming to North and taking over the Donner Swim Club. He coached numerous high school All-Americans and four Olympic Trials qualifiers while at North.

Sheridan, who retired as North coach and Dean of Students following the 2014-15 school year, was announced as the Greensboro coach on Tuesday.

“The excitement I feel and the opportunity to coach at Greensboro College gives me the ability to find student-athletes across the country that want a high caliber education, along with the ability to continue their swimming careers in a program that is anxious to grow and compete at a high level in Division III athletics,” Sheridan told greensborocollegesports.com. “What these young people will find at Greensboro College is that they are among a close-knit community of students and educators in a fantastic setting in North Carolina.”

Eagle part of national title

Brown County junior Emma Summers pitched three shutouts on July 29, including one in the championship game, to lead Indiana Shockwaves-Perry to the 16-and-under Triple Crown East Coast Nationals title.

The Shockwaves went 9-0 in the nationals, which were played in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The national championship was the third for Summers.

That night, former Olympians should check in between 6 and 7 p.m. at the west gate entrance along Marr Road.

Bull Dog just misses record

Nathaly Munnicha’s medalist round of 3-under-par 69 in last week’s Zionsville Invitational at Golf Club of Indiana was the second-best 18-hole score in Columbus North girls golf history.

Taylor Gohn has the record with a 4-under-par 68 in the 2008 Center Grove Invitational at The Legends. Gohn also fired a 69 in the 2009 Center Grove invite.

Sydney Anderson carded rounds of 70 and 71 in 2014, and her sister Holly shot 71 on the final day of the 2016 state finals, when she won medalist honors. Gohn also had a 71 in 2009.
