Emergency notifications vital

The lightning strike that has temporarily left the town of Hope’s outdoor warning siren inoperable makes it even more important for Bartholomew County residents to utilize the city/county emergency notification system, Everbridge.

It can contact people by phone, text and email. It’s handy when bad weather and other emergencies affect residents, and they need information to make important safety decisions.

We encourage all county residents to sign up for the emergency notification system. To do that, go online at columbus.in.gov and click on “sign me up for emergency alerts” on the home page. The short time it takes to register is well worth the safety information the system provides.

Worthy winners

Communities need next generations of residents who strengthen the workforce and improve the community through their work and volunteerism. Columbus Young Professionals and the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce are making sure such individuals are recognized.

Four individuals, between ages 21 and 40, and one business will be honored Friday at the second NextGen Awards Luncheon at The Commons. The winners are:

  • Ashley Abner, JCB, Young Professional Volunteer of the Year
  • Brian Payne, Columbus Municipal Airport director, Young Professional Innovator of the Year
  • Nick Williams, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. director of technology, Young Professional Educator of the Year
  • Jonathan Nesci, Hale Industrial Design, Unsung Hero
  • Lucabe Coffee Co., owned by Alissa and Tyler Hodge, NextGen Business of the Year

Their contributions have made a difference in the community and are worthy of recognition.

Enjoy film fun

Columbus Young Professionals is presenting “Back to the Future” as part of its free, public Moonlight Movie series Sept. 15 at Mill Race Park. The movie will show at dusk, and the event features popsicles and food and drink for purchase.

The event is a great use of the park and its amphitheater. It’s inexpensive entertainment for the community in a relaxed setting. That’s a winning combination.
