Letter: Letter writer mistaken about CNN report

I write concerning Joseph Cole’s letter to the editor of Sept. 7 titled “CNN report example of dishonest press.” Mr. Cole should watch the Fox News interview with Lanny Davis where Mr. Davis takes full responsibility for the confusion on that story. Here’s a link to that interview: https://tinyurl.com/yatqbcyz.

The story was not “fake news,” much less “very fake news,” but was a story reported after the reporters had been misled by someone who apparently wants to sell a book he has written. They did not report a “straight-up lie” or something they knew was not true.

The mainstream media does make mistakes. They sometimes put too much faith in dishonest people. But that does not mean that all “news” sources are equally valid or equally corrupt, and therefore we can just believe what we want to believe. Yes, there is a difference between a free press and an honest press. I hope one day we will learn to tell the difference and not just search for the “news” that happens to support what we believe rather than what is true.
