Golden Eagles hand Bull Dogs first loss of season

NOBLESVILLE — Class 3A No. 10 Guerin Catholic kept 6A No. 3 Columbus North from scoring the entire second half Friday night and celebrated its homecoming with a 17-10 win.

The Bull Dogs took the lead after Hunter Huser set up a 1-yard touchdown run from Blake Huffman with a 56-yard return of the opening kickoff. After the Golden Eagles kicked a field goal, Spencer Rivera booted a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter to give North at 10-3 lead at halftime.

Both offenses struggled to gain yards to start the second half, but an interception gave the ball to the Golden Eagles on the Bull Dog 10 yard-line. An 8-yard pass on the first play of the fourth quarter tied the game at 10-10.

The North defense made a few key stops, including a Hunter Huser interception while Guerin (4-1) was threatening to score late in the fourth. The Bull Dogs (4-1) couldn’t capitalize and gave the ball back to the Golden Eagles on a punt.

North kept Guerin Catholic running back Dylan Crossen from gaining more than six yards on a single run before he broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run with 2:15 remaining.

The Bull Dogs took over at their own 12 down by seven and about two minutes left. They got it to the 49, but a dropped pass turned into Trenton Kelley’s second interception with 15 seconds left.

Kelley ended the game with 218 passing yards while completing 18 of his 38 passes. D’Andre Scruggs caught seven passes for 76 yards, and Huffman caught four passes for 72 yards. Preston Terrell had two receptions for 40 yards.

“Credit to Guerin’s players and their staff,” North coach Tim Bless said. “They had an excellent game plan, and we knew on film that they were very fundamental, that they had some really good defensive players, and it definitely helped them.”
