GIRLS SOCCER

NEW ALBANY — Class 3A No. 17 Columbus East moved within one win of clinching at least a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title with a 4-0 win Saturday at New Albany.

Alana Dwenger netted two goals and two assists for the Olympians (10-2, 5-0). Sarah Park added a goal and an assist, Jaeda Berkemeier scored a goal and Kamebry Wagner had an assist.

East outshot the Bulldogs 12-2. Karisma Parker recorded two saves in the first 77 minutes, and Erin McIntyre did not face a shot over the final three minutes.

Eagles edge Cougars

NASHVILLE — Skylar Fleischman scored off assist from Kennedy Morgan early in the second half to give Brown County a 1-0 win against North Putnam.

Fleischman recorded five first-half saves for the Eagles (3-6-1). Hannah Hummel played the second half in goal and did not face a shot.

Bull Dogs finish third

TERRE HAUTE — The Columbus North girls fell three points short of a Conference Indiana title in a close three-team battle. No. 10 Bloomington North won with 46 points to 48 for No. 15 Bloomington South and 49 for the No. 13 Bull Dogs.

Olivia Morlok led Columbus North with a second-place finish in 19 minutes, 37.2 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Mackenzie Barnett took fourth in 20:10.0, while Sydney Geckler was 10th (20:42.7), Aric Tong 16th (21:00.6), Emma Smith 17th (21:05.4), Ella Anderson 18th (21:06.6) and Abbey Landini 22nd (21:26.6).

The Bull Dog boys also finished third. No. 1 Bloomington South won with 30 points to 67 for No. 13 Bloomington North and 72 for No. 19 Columbus North, which was without one of its top runners in Sam Horak.

John Sluys finished seventh in 16:38.4 to lead the Bull Dogs. Collin Pruitt took 12th in 17:25.0, while Rishi Poludasu was 14th (17:36.0), Matt Newell 18th (17:43.0), Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff 22nd (17:47.9), Evan Carr 23rd (17:48.6) and Carson Littrell 34th (18:22.4).

Panthers sweep invite

AURORA — Jennings County’s boys and girls swept the combined South Dearborn Invitational. The Panther boys won with 32 points to 54 for Batesville and 109 for Rushville, while the Jennings girls scored 51 points to 62 for Batesville and 72 for Greensburg.

Carter Leak won the boys race in 16:21. Lane Elsner finished fourth in 16:43, while Alex Hendrix was sixth (16:49), Gavin Hendrix eighth (17:00) and AJ Siener 13th (17:40).

Emma Morrison led the Panther girls with a third-place finish in 19:40.2. Ashley Heindel took eighth in 20:49.2, while Patricia Henney was ninth (21:03.2), Kaylee Ebinger 11th (21:13.1) and Heather Sea 20th (21:49.4).

East teams take 11th

CARMEL — Columbus East’s girls finished 11th in the Championship Race, and the Olympian boys took 11th in the Invitational race in the Flashrock Invitational at Northview Church in Carmel.

The East girls scored 334 points. No. 2 Carmel edged No. 1 Fort Wayne Carroll 45-46, while No. 5 Zionsville took third with 78 and No. 5 Fishers was fourth with 90. Olivia Linneman led the Olympians with a 73rd-place finish in 21:29.86, while Jordan Spurgeon was 87th (21:57.94), Elizabeth Stevens 88th (21:58.44), Amanda Pottorff 93rd (22:18.73) and Olivia Shoaf 96th (22:36.76).

The East boys scored 333 points. Brebeuf Jesuit won with 50 points to 80 for New Palestine. Nick Walter finished 49th in 18:52.66 to lead the Olympians, while Tyler Hertle was 61st (19:03.69), Garrett McGaha 72nd (19:16:08), Ryan Sadtler 101st (20:02.77) and Matt Novreske 109th (20:23.51).

Cougar boys claim third

SHELBYVILLE — South Decatur’s boys finished third, and the South Decatur and Hauser girls took fourth and fifth in the Mid-Hoosier Conference meet at Blue River Park.

Southwestern (Shelby) won the boys race with 36 points to 51 for Morristown, 60 for the Cougars and 74 for North Decatur. Southwestern scored 43 points to take the girls race to 55 for Waldron, 66 for North Decatur, 76 for South Decatur and 110 for Hauser.

The Jets had only three boys runners, but two of them finished in the top three. Emils Vigants took second in 18:47.92, while Ryan Ault was third (19:00.46) and Thomas Essex 29th (24:32.61).

Trevor Newby led the Cougars with a sixth-place finish in 19:41.54. Nickolas Keppel took ninth in 20:40.57, while Nolan Storm was 17th (22:10.48), Logan Platt 25th (22:32.86) and Terry Redelman 26th (23:44.30).

Edinburgh had three boys runners. Parker Young finished 33rd in 25:25:36, while Chase Littlejohn was 38th (20:5.77) and Nicholas Detling 39th (31:25.34).

In the girls race, South Decatur’s Sierra Kalli finished fourth in 24:00.26. Bailey Tomson and Ali Boilanger took 16th and 17th in 26:58.77 and 27:10.73, while Shelby Martin was 20th (28:33.28) and Claire Hamilton 24th (29:45.66).

Hauser had four runners, one short of the number needed to score as a team. Addison Jones finished 18th in 27:13.84, while Leah Joyce was 28th (33:17.85), Lexi Tallent 29th (33:23.45) and Ninel Garcia-Sims 32nd (38:50.32).

Malkia Williams led three Lancers runners with a 33rd-place finish in 42:28.28. Faith Walker took 34th in 42:46.71, and Kaylia Kelley was 35th in 43:12.44.

Castle rallies past East

NEWBURGH — Columbus East led Class 3A No. 6 Castle 1-0 with seven minutes remaining, but the Knights scored in the 74th and 77th minutes to rally for a 2-1 win.

Antony Espinosa scored off assist from Chris Quisenberry in the 66th minute for the Olympians (5-6), who were outshot 14-4. Zach Roberts recorded seven saves.

Jets fall to Indians

ANDERSON — Hauser couldn’t find the net in a 5-0 loss at Anderson.

The Jets fell to 5-3-1.

New Albany tops Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County dropped a 5-0 HHC decision to New Albany.

Carson McNulty recorded five saves for the Panthers (1-12, 0-5).

Brown County wins

NASHVILLE — Brown County was steady defensively in a 1-0 win against North Putnam.

Will Normile scored the goal for the Eagles (3-6) off an assist from Ricky Stanley. Jeffrey Carlberg posted 13 saves.

Bull Dogs blank Patriots

TERRE HAUTE — No. 14 Columbus North won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 Conference Indiana win at Terre Haute North.

Kevin Lin beat Peter Christ 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Bhavey Jain downed Jae Won Jung 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Eamon Ma topped Max Marietta 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (6-3, 3-1).

Columbus North’s Adam Saad and Nathan Lin beat Alex McGuire and James Rogge 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Joey Zhao and Matthew Liu downed Cade Moore and Ethan Knott 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 doubles.

East finishes second

Columbus East went 2-1 to finish second in its own invitational. The Olympians bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Providence to beat Martinsville 3-2 and Evansville Memorial 4-1.

Pranav Kumar, JT Kuhlman, Nathan Hatchett and Derek Heideman all went 2-1 at various positions for East (5-7).

Lancer captures title

WALDRON — Edinburgh’s Coltan Henderson won the No. 1 singles title at the Mid-Hoosier Conference Individual Tournament.

Henderson beat Hauser’s Ethan Wallace 6-1, 6-3 in the final. Wallace made All-Conference for the Jets, along with Jacob Luken and Aaron Mee at No. 1 doubles.

Panthers take fourth

WHITELAND — Jennings County went 0-3 in the Whiteland Invitational, falling to Shelbyville 4-1, Batesville 5-0 and Whiteland 4-1.

Thomas Schuler had the win for the Panthers (1-9) against Shelbyville, beating Austin Dwenter 6-2, 6-3. Schuler and Wyatt St. John beat Josh Pitts and Christian Felker 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles against Whitleland.

Vikings stop Eagles

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Brown County finished fourth in the Western Indiana Conference after falling at West Vigo 5-0 in the third-place match.

Aaron McCann fell to Logan Lemon 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Chase Watson lost to Dylan Lemon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Josh Miller fell to Ryan Brown 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (4-7).

Brown County’s Spencer Blee and Nolan Patterson lost to Ben Duncan and Caleb Roush 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Reid Davis and Noah Cochran fell to Garrett Roush and Ashton Matherly 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Bull Dogs go 1-3

NEW ALBANY — Columbus North went 1-3 in four three-set matches to finish sixth in New Albany’s Ultra Ankle Challenge.

The Bull Dogs fell to New Albany 19-25, 27-25, 15-9 and Brownstown Central 25-27, 25-14, 15-9 before beating Jeffersonville 19-25, 25-9, 15-10 in its pool. North then lost to Jasper 17-25, 25-16, 15-13 in the fifth-place match.

Lily Meyercord led the Bull Dogs (6-1) with 75 assists and nine aces in the four matches. Emma Tynan pounded 23 kills, Lauryn James recorded 14 blocks, and Maddy Sebahar had 49 digs.

Crusaders win twice

Columbus Christian wrapped up a perfect Southern Roads Conference season with 28-26, 25-12, 25-14 win at Evansville Christian.

Mayah Schundelmier recorded 15 kills, one block and two aces; Madison Henderson had four kills, 11 digs and two aces and Hannah Stair added 23 assists, 10 digs and 10 aces for the Crusaders. Michaela Schundelmier posted nine digs and three aces, Kayla Jones tallied seven digs and two aces and Lauren Hunnicutt pounded seven kills.

Columbus Christian (13-1) then traveled from Evansville to Montgomery and beat Pleasantview Christain 25-17, 25-20, 25-10. Mayah Schundelmier notched seven kills, one assist block, six digs and five aces; and Stair had 15 assists, one block assist, nine digs and six aces. Henderson added three kills, 11 digs and six aces; Hunnicutt contributed five kills, one block assist and six digs; Kayla Jones also had six digs and Ellie Ridder recorded one block assist.

Hauser takes second

LAWRENCEBURG — Hauser went 3-1 to finish second in the Lawrenceburg Tournament. The Jets beat South Dearborn 25-9, 25-11, Rising Sun 25-16, 27-25 and Southwestern (Shelby) 19-25, 25-14, 15-13 before falling to Lawrenceburg 25-17, 25-19 in the championship match.

Shelby Fugate led the Jets (12-9) with 25 kills and 32 digs. Hannah Johnson pounded 25 kills, Aunaka Wasil recorded 75 assists, Olivia Wright had five blocks and Mary Branum served seven aces.

Also for Hauser, Kylie Lock added 19 kills, four assists, two blocks and 31 digs; and Fugate contributed three assists, a block and three aces. Melanie Taylor notched 30 digs, Wasil had 13 digs and three aces, Sophia Musillami served three aces, Marnie Schwartzkopf pounded nine kills, Abby Branum tallied three assists and Johnson had one block.

Panthers win sectional

MADISON — Jennings County won its first sectional title in eight years with a 402 in the Madison Sectional. Madison finished second with a 415, and Southwestern (Hanover) claimed the third-and-final regional qualifying spot with a 420.

Sydney Campbell finished third individually with an 89 to lead the Panthers. Peyton Whitehead carded a 95, Ellie Hearne added a 109, Annie Ertel shot 110 and Destiny Joray had a 125.

Jennings will play in the Roncalli Regional Saturday at Smock Golf Course in Indianapolis.

Cubs topple Panthers

MADISON — Jennings County led 7-0 and 14-7 in the first half Friday night, by Madison tied the game at halftime and scored 22 unanswered points in third quarter to claim a 36-14 HHC win.

The Panthers (1-4, 0-3) scored on a 59-yards pass from Lance Bailey to Jared Corya and 1-yard sneak by Bailey. But Jennings was plagued by five turnovers.

“I don’t care who you’re playing, you turn the ball over that much, you’re not going to win,” Jennings coach Rick Zimmerman said.

Bailey threw for 179 yards, and Corya had three catches for 130 yards. Brooks Wathen ran for 68 yards in his first action since injuring a knee in the Panthers’ Week 2 win at Brown County.

Hornets halt Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County was within 30-14 at halftime Friday, but Beech Grove pulled away for a 58-14 win.

Noah Carter threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 80 yards to Devon Smith-Harden and 11 yards to Nick Huls. But the Eagles (1-4) were hapmered by six turnovers.

“We just had a lot of turnovers,” Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. “We really played well. We fought and fought. It really was a game of a couple mistakes and some turnovers, and it kind of took us out of the game.”

Carter completed 14 of 39 passes for 240 yards and the two scores. Smith-Harden caught six passes for 130 yards, and Kody Walsh carried 14 times for 73 yards.
