Get out and vote. We hear that over and over, and it is so very important to do that. But, do we vote with knowledge of the candidate? The Republic usually provides us with objective data about each candidate. But, for me, there are always more questions.
Our televisions give us information about national and some about world events. However, it is local and state politics that have a major effect on our daily lives, maybe, even more than national politics. Local politics, to a large extent, determine our transportation, our education systems, our tax rates, our local health system, our trash collection, people trails, sidewalks, what will happen to FairOaks Mall and almost every other such aspect of our lives.
Our local politics decides how much is spent on our jail so that rehabilitative programs can actually take place. Will Thrive Alliance, a 501C-3 agency, have to sell some of its housing to pay taxes on housing it provides for the financially challenged? How many deputies can the sheriff afford?
To learn more about our candidates attend a Candidates Forum. A forum will be offered at Columbus Community Dialogue, which will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Living Room, corner of Sycamore and 14th streets. Most opposed candidates for local and state office will be present.
Since the dialogue takes place over the dinner hour, pizza and soft drinks will be available. Donations toward their cost would be appreciated.
Residents are invited to Columbus Community Dialogue, which meets the first Tuesday of most months at the location listed. The primary topic discussed is how to make life easier for those who are financially challenged.
