Columbus North senior golfer Reese Moore wanted to give back to a foundation still in its infancy, First Tee of Columbus.
On Wednesday, Moore delivered in a huge way after raising $1,100 during a Sept. 29 golf outing for his senior project.
“I wanted to raise awareness for the First Tee because it has came a long way the past couple years,” Moore said. “First Tee eventually will segue into high school sports. I figured that the earlier I could introduce people to how beneficial that the program introduces people to golf, I believe it would serve the high school teams much better.”
When the First Tee started in Columbus a couple years ago, there were only 14 members. Today, there are 85 kids involved with the program. A majority of the kids are beginners between 7 and 10 years old.
“It’s come a really long way,” Greenbelt and Par 3 pro Keith VanDeventer said. “Reese has done an awesome job with this program. It was a gift for us, a blessing for us that he was able to do what he did.”
Moore believes that he accomplished everything that he wanted to for his senior project, and the attendance exceeded expectations.
“They were even more people that came out to donate but didn’t play because they were busy,” Moore said. “They still donated, and we raised more money than I even thought we would. Along with the prizes like the putting contest, 50-50 and the mulligans, we raised double than what I thought we were going to make.”
This spring, Moore played varsity most of the season for a Bull Dog team that missed qualifying for state on the fifth-score tiebreaker. He will look toward to trying to make one final push to try for state in his final campaign for North next spring.
