Letter: Nowlin best candidate for District 59

In the comic opera "HMS Pinafore," Sir Joseph explains his success in British government: "I always voted at my party’s call; and I never thought of thinking for myself at all."

I believe we have a Statehouse filled with Sir Josephs. They are career folks, eager to avoid risk by voting the way they are told by their party leaders. Those who actually evaluate bills and vote according to the bill’s merit are termed disloyal.

It takes little thought to vote a straight party ticket at your polling place. It takes little thought or courage for a legislator to vote straight party in the Statehouse. The difficult part is voting for the best of candidates and bills regardless of party.

If a resident, like 200 others, attended the candidate forum at the Columbus Learning Center on Oct. 18, they’d have no doubts about the best candidate for our legislative district, Dale Nowlin.

He’s running in House District 59 as a Democrat. He believes that all parties can have good ideas. He has the temperament, training and experience to differentiate between "sales talk" and fact. He has the backbone to fight for bills that are best for the people of Indiana.
