Teacher selected for history program
A Central Middle School social studies teacher will participate in a National History Day program that memorializes individuals who served in World War II.
Alan Birkemeier, who teaches eighth-grade social studies, was among eight educators from across the country selected for the Understanding Sacrifice program, which tells the stories of fallen American heroes.
Birkemeier and seven other teachers will memorialize eight service members of World War II who never made it home and to help invigorate World War II teaching in their classrooms. The teachers will research the life and sacrifice of their chosen service member known as a Fallen Hero over the next nine months.
The group will also travel to Europe in June to continue their studies, while portions of the group will visit the East Coast Memorial in Battery Park in New York, the Suresnes American Cemetery, the Brittany American Cemetery and the Luxembourg American Cemetery.
The program also provides teachers with World War II research through primary and secondary sources, virtual lessons and online discussions.
