As the busyness and stress of the holiday season approaches, it’s useful to pause and reflect on reasons to be thankful. DIVORCE: A 19TH CENTURY EPIDEMIC, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 17, Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St., Columbus. Presentation provides introduction to American divorce records, some of the resources available for locating a divorce case. Presenter Meredith Thompson, Indiana Genealogical Society, will touch on the history of American divorce laws and identify areas that became known as “divorce mills” because of their willingness to grant quick divorces—including Indianapolis. John Cunningham, a three-time felon and 12-year heroin addict, shares his story of recovery. Cunningham share his philosophy: “No matter how hopeless it seems that no matter how far down we go, or how bad it gets, you can recover.”

IUPUC will host a free showing of “Baby Doll” as part of its fall film series focused on adaptations of Tennessee Williams plays. “Baby Doll” stars Eli Wallach, Carrol Baker, and Karl Malden. The story centers on Archie Lee Meighan (Malden), a failing cotton gin owner who is married to Baby Doll (Baker), a 19-year old childlike beauty whose father arranged the marriage for financial reasons.
