Central Middle School was named a state champion in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl competition.
The team, competing Nov. 10 at Purdue University in Class 1, missed one word to tie for first place with Discovery Middle School in Granger, said Mindy Summers, Central language arts teacher.
Central’s team missed the word "periphrasis," while Discovery missed the word "awkwardly," Summers said.
Students who competed on the team were Vignesh Premkumar, Karthik Varigonda, Amit Gangadhara, Prateeti Varanasi, Manya Suresh, Shruthika Kumarasubramanian, Fareeha Parvin, Ananya Adur, Ananya Ramanujapuram, Ian Smith and Austin Clark.
Summers said the entire school was invited to try out for the Spell Bowl team. Individuals were asked to study the first 200 words on a list with 22 students participating in the tryout with the field being narrowed to the top 12 individuals, she added.
Summers said the 12th student on the team, Ritisha Rashmil, decided not to attend the state competition. Eight students represent the team as competitors and Rashmil did not compete, Summers said.
