Two people were arrested on drug and weapon possession charges after a traffic stop near 17th and Washington streets.
Columbus police stopped the vehicle at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday for a minor traffic violation, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Officers detected the odor of marijuana while speaking to the driver, Tykin J. Stewart, 26, Columbus, and his passenger, Peyton M. Carey, 21, Angola, Harris said. A short time later, a Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department canine alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, Harris said.
While searching Stewart’s vehicle, officers found a loaded revolver underneath the driver’s seat, Harris said. They later recovered drug paraphernalia from Carey as well as two bags of marijuana she attempted to conceal in her clothing, Harris said.
As officers continued to search the vehicle, they found a large bag of marijuana in the vehicle’s engine compartment, Harris said.
Stewart was arrested on preliminary charges of dealing in marijuana with a prior conviction, possession of marijuana and carrying a handgun without a license, Harris said.
Carey was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
