City OKs increase in contract for Taylor Road project

Improvements are planned on Taylor Road from 25th Street to Rocky Ford Road starting in 2020 that will bring a new sidewalk, a side path and better drainage.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a supplemental agreement with DLZ, an Indianapolis-based engineering architectural firm, that increased an original contract amount approved a year ago by $80,095 to $479,895.

The increase in the contract was due to right-of-way engineering and utility relocation, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer.

The $4 million project will be done in two phases beginning in 2020 and is being 80 percent federally funded. The remainder of the cost will be paid by the city using its thoroughfare fund, which is used to help pay for street improvements, Hayward said.

Hayward said the planned work will involve reducing the pavement in some areas to help reduce speeding.

Currently, the speed limit is 30 mph north of 25th Street, 35 mph south of 25th Street and 35 mph north of Rocky Ford Road, but Hayward said the city hopes to make the speed limit consistent in the residential area.

A sidewalk will be installed on the east side of the road, while a side path will be added on the west side as part of the project, he said.
