Tough Mudder addition boost for tourism

Columbus has worked hard to make a name for itself in sports tourism, bringing many visitors to the community for athletic events.

That’s included USSSA softball tournaments, significant amateur golf tourneys and events for baseball, soccer and swimming, for example.

The result of the Columbus Area Visitors Center’s efforts has been hundreds of thousands of sports-related visitors and millions of dollars of financial impact.

Now the visitor’s center has finalized a contract to bring a Tough Mudder extreme obstacle competition to Ceraland for the next five years.

That’s a big win for the city and its tourism efforts. Extreme obstacle competitions are rapidly growing in popularity as more people want to test their physical limits.

The Ceraland event is expected to draw more than 5,000 competitors to the city Aug. 3-4 of next year, in addition to spectators, and generate $1.5 million in direct spending.

Adding a Tough Mudder event to the city’s sports tourism lineup is beneficial because it adds more variety, just like the Cummins-created Mill Race Marathon did six years ago.

The Tough Mudder event will provide another way for people to get to know the Columbus community, its architecture, its sports assets and its people.

That’s good for the community.
