Sherman F. Burnett, 63, of Columbus, passed from this life at 11:32 a.m. Sunday, January 6, 2019 at his home. Sherman was born April 30, 1955, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Sherman L. and Carol Joan Wilbur Burnett.
Sherman had a 37 year career with Vectren where he held many positions including being a welder.
He was a member of Elizabethtown United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 24 in Columbus, the Legion Riders and the National Rifle Association.
He was a past member of the Columbus Moose Lodge No. 398 and Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 741.
Sherman had a passion for refurbishing and collecting guns, restoring cars and riding his Harley-Davidson. Sherman was an expert gardener and he cherished his beloved dogs, Sugar, Lucy, Chlover and his very favorite, Molly.
Sherman is survived by his former wife, Nelda Burnett of Columbus; sons, Randy Burnett and his companion, Jennifer Mead, of Columbus and Jamey Burnett of Columbus; grandchildren, Chloe and Lilly Michael and Josie Palmer Bryant all of Columbus; a foster-daughter, Tara Sluder of Columbus; brothers, Jim Burnett of Indianapolis and Rick (Connie) Chapman of North Vernon; sister, Sharon Maxin of Billings, Montana; sisters-in-law, Rhonda Wilber of Columbus and Glenna Ballard of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Denatta Burnett; infant daughter, Tina Burnett; and a sister, Mary Alice.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Reverend Nathan Shockley officiating.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service Thursday at the funeral home.
Sherman will be laid to rest at Springer Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in memory of Sherman may be made to the American Legion Post No. 24.
