Three local swimmers contributed to Team Indiana’s 500-point victory over the Ohio Mid State All-Stars at the 2019 Mid-States All-Star Championships last weekend in Indianapolis.
The best swimmers ages 9 to 14 years old from Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Kentucky were invited to compete in three age groups by gender — 10-and-under, 11-12 and 13-14. Club Olympia head coach Jennifer Brinegar was Team Indiana’s coach for the 11-12 age group.
Club Olympia’s Brady Beyer scored in all of his races, ending up with a total of 63 points. He placed second in the 13-14 boys 200 breaststroke in a 2 minutes, 10.25 seconds. His best time of 2:10.19 ranks him fifth in the U.S. among 13-year-old boys.
Beyer also finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.31 (10th fastest in the nation) and the 400 individual medley in 4:18.58 (17th in the nation). He took ninth in the 200 IM in 2:02.62, 13th in the 200 butterfly in 2:07.79, and 14th in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.55. Beyer also swam on Team Indiana’s B Team for the 200 medley relay, which placed 10th.
Club Olympia’s Nalanie Cortez also scored in all of her races, ending up with 68 points for Team Indiana by finishing in fourth in the 13-14 girls 200 butterfly in 2:09.63, sixth in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.09 and 200 IM in 2:10.97, eighth in the 100 freestyle in 53.27 and 100 butterfly in 58.95 and 12th in the 500 freestyle in 5:15.86. Cortez also was on Team Indiana’s A Team, which won the 200 freestyle relay, and she was on the B Team that placed sixth in the 200 medley relay.
Daniel Utterback of Columbus, competing unattached, swam in three events. He was on the the 13-14 boys the 200 freestyle relay placed first and the 200 medley relay team that finished 10th. He also placed eighth in the 50 freestyle.
Utterback also swam at the #Chasestrong Invitational at Indian Creek High School in and won the 1,000 freestyle.
Club Olympians take challenge
Twenty-seven Club Olympia swimmers competed in the #Chasestrong Invitational. Nine of those swimmers completed the prestigious CHASESTRONG Challenge Friday night. The CHASESTRONG Challenge consists of the 400 IM and 200butterfly, considered to be the two most difficult races in age group swimming. This “Challenge” honors Chase Smith, an Indian Creek Aquatic Club and Indian Creek High School swimmer who has battled Ewing’s Sarcoma twice in the past four years. Evan Patterson, Ethan Myers, Misha Machavariani, Cole Ehara, Aidan Castillo, Arjun Bhadoria, Pratt Badve, Daniella Preston and Sanaa Kulkarni completed the challenge. Kulkarkni, at age 9, was the youngest participant to complete the challenge this year.
Club Olympia swimmers also excelled in Saturday’s “pentathlon,” consisting of the composite time for all five events swam that day, with the top eight swimmers in each age group receiving medals. Cassidy Furnish and Connelly Furnish, swimming unattached, finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the girls 10-and-under pentathlon. Daniella Preston finished sixth in the girls 11-12 pentathlon. Joshua Pendleton finished second and Shreyan Kulkarni sixth in the boys 8-and-under pentathlon. Misha Machavariani finished first in the boys 11-12 pentathlon. Cole Ehara finished third, Arjun Bhadoria sixth and Pratt Badve seventh in the boys 13-14 pentathlon. Evan Patterson finished first and Ethan Myers third in the boys 15-and-over pentathlon.
Badve scored 111 points, finishing seventh in the boys open 200 breaststroke, eighth in the 1,000 freestyle and 12th in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly. He also took fifth in the boys 13-and-over 50 breaststroke; seventh in the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke; eighth in the 50 backstroke; 10th in the 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly and 13th in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Bhadoria scored 107 points, finishing fifth in the boys open 1,000 freestyle, eighth in the 200 freestyle, 10th in the 400 IM and 13th in the 200 butterfly. He also took eighth in the boys 13-and-over and 50 breaststroke; ninth in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke 200 IM and 50 butterfly; 10th in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly and 12th in the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
Castillo scored 23 points, finishing ninth in the boys open 1,000 freestyle. He also took 13th in the boys 11-12 50 Freestyle, 14th in the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly and 15th in the 50 backstroke and 200 IM.
Zoie Chandelkar scored 19 points, finishing eighth in the girls 10-and-under 50 butterfly, 13th in the 200 IM, 14th in the 50 backstroke and 16th in the 50 freestyle. She also competed in the open 400 IM and 500 freestyle, dropping over a minute in each event from her previous-best times.
Ehara scored 149 points, finishing second in the boys open 1000 freestyle, fifth in the 200 butterfly and sixth in the 200 breaststroke. He also took fourth in the boys 13-and-over 100 butterfly; fifth in the 200 IM and 50 butterfly; sixth in the 100 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke; seventh in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 100 backstroke.
Cassidy Furnish scored 50 points, finishing 13th in the girls 12-and-under 500 freestyle. She also took second in the girls 10-and-under 50 breaststroke, fifth in the 200 IM, 10th in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke and 16th in the 50 butterfly. She also competed in the Girls open 400 IM.
Connelly Furnish scored 48 points, finishing 12th in the girls 12-and-under 500 freestyle. She also took fifth in the 50 breaststroke, eighth in the 50 freestyle, 11th in the 50 backstroke and seventh in the 200 IM.
Sanaa Kulkarni scored 13 points, finishing eighth in the girls 10-and-under 50 breaststroke and 15th in the 50 butterfly. Shreyan Kulkarni scored 46 points, finishing sixth in the boys 8-and-under 100 IM, seventh in the 25 breaststroke, eighth in the 25 freestyle, 11th in the 25 backstroke and 13th in the 25 butterfly.
Misha Machavariani scored 208 points, finishing second in the boys open 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke; third in the 400 IM, 200 butterfly and 1,000 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle. He also took first in the boys 11-12 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 200 IM and second in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke. In addition to successfully completing the CHASESTRONG Challenge on Friday, he also swam the boys open 1,000 freestyle, placing third in all three events.
Tony Machavariani scored 51 points, finishing fourth in the boys 8-and-under 25 backstroke, sixth in the 25 freestyle, seventh in the 25 butterfly and eighth in the 25 Breaststroke.
Myers scored 17 points, finishing 14th in the Boys Open 200 butterfly. He also took 12th in the boys 13-and-over 50 butterfly, 13th in the 50 breaststroke, 14th in the 100 butterfly and 15th in the 50 backstroke.
Patterson was the top scorer in the entire meet with 240 points. Winning every event he swam, Patterson was first in the boys open 400 IM, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle. He also took first in the 13-and-over 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM, as well as the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 50 Backstroke and 50 butterfly.
Brooklyn Pendleton scored 36 points, finishing fourth in the girls 10-and-under 50 backstroke, fifth in the 50 butterfly, 11th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 200 IM.
Joshua Pendleton scored 86 points, finishing first in the boys 8-and-under 25 freestyle, second in the 25 backstroke and 25 Butterfly and third in the 25 breaststroke and 100 IM.
Preston scored 118 points, finishing seventh in the girls open 1,000 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle; 10th in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke; 11th in the 400 IM and 13th in the 200 freestyle. She also took fifth in the girls 11-12 50 backstroke, sixth in the 50 butterfly and 200 IM, eighth in the 50 breaststroke and 10th in the 50 freestyle. Preston was the second-highest 11-12 scorer, and the second-highest female scorer overall.
Matt Stuckwisch scored 133 points, finishing second in the boys 13-and-over 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke and third in the 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
Also swimming for Club Olympia were Advika Badve, Avi Banerjee, Nandini Kondhare, Grier Lane (unattached) and Lovely Panda. Arya Kichambare and Lily Pendleton, both 6 years old, competed in their first swim meet.
Donner swimmers compete
Donner Swim Club also competed in the #Chasestrong Invitational at Indian Creek. Abby Proffitt placed third in the 10-and-under girls pentathlon by finishing fourth in the 200 IM, fifth in the 50 freestyle, sixth in the 50 butterfly, eighth in the 50 backstroke and 12th in the 50 breaststroke.
In the 8-and-under age group, Xavier Zhang took 15th in the 25 butterfly. Andrew Mohs was 18th in the 25 freestyle.
For the 9-10 year old boys, Levi Bense placed 13th in the 50 breaststroke, 14th in the 50 backstroke and 16th in the 50 freestyle. Hudson Eicher took 12th in the 50 butterfly, 14th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 50 backstroke. Aarush Mahato was 10th in the 50 freestyle, 11th in the 50 butterfly, 14th in the 50 breaststroke and 17th in the 50 backstroke.
For the 9-10 girls, Cora Tregoning finished 20th in the 50 breastroke, 29th in the 50 freestyle, 30th in the 50 backstroke and 28th in the 50 butterfly. Mridula Muthukumaran took sixth in the 50 backstroke, 11th in the 50 butterfly and 200 IM, 12th in the 50 freestyle and 13th in the 50 breaststroke. Kanav Mehta was 24th in the 50 backstroke and 26th in the 50 butterfly. Saanvi Lella finished 43rd in the 50 breaststroke, 44th in the 50 butterfly, 49th in the 50 freestyle and 51st in the 50 backstroke. Jeannette Larsen took 39th in the 200 freestyle, 44th in the 50 breastroke and 47th in the 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle. Nitya Garg was 12th in the 50 butterfly, 14th in the 50 breaststroke, 17th in the 200 IM, 18th in the 50 freestyle and 20th in the 50 backstroke.
In the 11-12 girls age group, Ainsley Sherlock placed 11th in the 50 breaststroke, 13th in the 200 IM, 11th in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle and 12 th in the 50 backstroke. Nicole Brault was 23rd in the 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 200 IM; 25th in the 50 breaststroke and 27th in the 50 freestyle.
For the 11-12 boys, Andrew Brown finished 19th in the 50 butterfly, 23rd in the 50 freestyle and 24th in the 50 breaststroke. Makus Larsen took 16th in the 50 butterfly; 24th in the 50 freestyle and 25th in the 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Isaac Proffitt was eighth in the 50 backstroke, ninth in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke and 10th in the 50 butterfly and 200 IM.
For Donner’s 13-14-year-old boys, Carter Howell placed 14th in the 50 freestyle and 20th in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Brock Smith took 16th in the 50 freestyle, 17th in the 100 breaststroke, 18th in the 200 IM and 23rd in the 100 freestyle.
Josie Havenaar finished seventh in the 13-and-over girls 50 breaststroke, 12th in the 50 backstroke, 20th in the 500 freestyle, 22nd in the 50 freestyle, 24th in the 100 breaststroke, 26th in the 200 IM, 27th in the 100 backstroke and 28th in the 100 freestyle. Josie Franks took 20th in the 50 backstroke, 22nd in the 500 freestyle and 34th in the 200 freestyle. Natalie Brown was ninth in the 50 butterfly, 10th in the 50 breaststroke, 26th in the 50 freestyle, 28th in the 100 breaststroke, 29th in the 200 IM, 32nd in the 100 backstroke and 33rd in the 100 freestyle.
BROOMBALL
Monsters stay unbeaten
Monsters of Rock ran its record to 5-0 with a 4-0 shutout of The Rockpile. Zach Henderson scored two goals, and Greg Thomas and Jordan Garber each added one for Monsters.
CCA Kutters beat Slappin/ Balls 6-3. Scott Herron netted three goals, and Devan Herron, Lindsay Mundy and Tim Walton all added one for Kutters. Darien Castetter scored two goals, and Todd Ebbinger had one for Slappin’ Balls.
Hansons slipped past Toyota Tsunamis 5-3 behind goals from Matt Psota, Keith Henry, Dave VanValkenburg, Kyle Thocher and Josh Phillips. Greg McNealy scored all three goals for Tsunamis.
Our Name Is Earl posted a forfeit win against Yoopers.
BASKETBALL
Panthers sweep Cubs
The Jennings County seventh- and eighth-grade boys White teams swept Madison on Wednesday.
Keegan Manowitz and Matt Hines each scored 12 points to lead the eighth-grade (15-2) to a 47-44 win. Carter Kent scored 18 points, and Cole Sigler added 13 to lead the seventh-grade (15-1) to a 48-42 victory.
The Panther eighth-grade boys Blue team beat Immanuel Lutheran 43-31. Dylan Harrison led Jennings (7-4) with 18 points.
The eighth-grade Blue squad fell to Immanuel Lutheran 45-41. Skylar Lewis led the Panthers (5-6) with 19 points, and Eddie Ray added 10.
PRO WRESTLING
Three champs crowned
Three new Hoosier Pro Wrestling champions were crowned at "New Year’s Nightmare" at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.
Flash Flanagan beat Zack Pittman and Corbus in a Three-way Dance, and Echo beat Cooter. In the HPW Cruiserweight title match, Ace Jackson pinned Scarecrow to become the new champ.
Drax O’Brien and Lightning Bolt with Miss Courtney beat Big T Thomas Moore and Dalton Davis. After the win, Lightning Bolt attacked partner Drax O’Brien. DODO Brown beat the returning Tim Lutz by DQ.
In the HPW Tag Team Title Match, Buck Sexton and Dynamite Dillen beat Fireball and Jason Levi with Damien Sant and Aly Targett to win the HPW Tag Belts when Buck Sexton pinned Jason Levi.
In the HPW Tri State Title Match, Omega De pinned Duke the Nuke to keep the belt in a strap match where Duke’s advisor D Rose and Richard Sharkey got strapped big-time by the fans who bought straps
The HPW Heavyweight Championship Title Match was a Brawl, and Butcher Manson won the war over HPW champ Kenny Kage to become the new HPW Heavyweight Champ.
