Children’s choir camp now open for sign-ups

The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is hosting its annual Choral Fest summer music camp May 17 to 19 at Central Middle School downtown for students in third through eighth grade.

Registration for the camp, open to those in third through eighth grade, is now open for a discounted cost of $55 per person.

The choir, under the direction of Ruth Dwyer, has made its mark far beyond Columbus in a myriad of ways, including performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall and touring the United States and Europe. Plus, its alumni include people such as Columbus native and current Broadway performer Mary Claire King. Moreover, Columbus native and current "Hamilton" touring cast member Marja Harmon was a member of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which birthed the local group.

The spring, weekend program is structured as high quality choral music experiences woven into musical activities. Camp classes teach students how to sing in a group, play certain instruments and develop their onstage and offstage confidence, and the welcoming environment promotes solid friendships.

Throughout the camp at the school, 725 Seventh St., students participate in choir, movement, recorder and Orff instrument classes. At the end of the program on May 19, camp participants are featured in a Choral Fest concert, showcasing the skills they learned during the summer.
